Statement from Michael Blake on the passing of Mama Hazel Dukes March 1, 2025.
There’s just something about that name!
It’s a powerful line in a classic church song. But, in our New York City and nationally, especially among the Civil rights community, the exact same sentiment of reverence is felt towards Mama Hazel Dukes.
From her voice calling out for you in large room or her giving sage advice on the phone, from advising Presidents to empowering people, we have lost a shero in our world with Mama Dukes going on to glory.
To her family and the NAACP family, I extend my heartfelt condolences, prayers and love because you allowed us to share precious time on earth with a Leader of Leaders, a Mother of Mothers in Hazel Dukes!
My last phone call with her she was talking through national political strategy and it’s impact on Black communities with such ease, grace and mastery that my heart was full and my smile was ever present because her love for the people was undeniable and her brilliance was unmatched.
Mama Dukes made it a point to call many of us her children. The way she spoke with such love and pride for L. Joy Williams and Tamika Mallory epitomizes that Family goes well beyond birth. Our hearts are hurting because we lost a Civil Rights Mother.
In perfect spiritual synergy, for Mama Dukes to become an Ancestor just as Black History Month ends and Women History Month begins, reminds us that God continues to watch over her movements and her life and legacy shall impact generations to come.
We as Black people and as a collective will honor Mama Hazel Dukes for generations to come because our lives, our future were made better by her. Walk with the Angels Mama Dukes, your children will carry the assignment for you now.
I love and thank you Mama Dukes for everything you did for me and for all of us.
